How Many Pages Should My Comic Book Have?
If you're planning to create a comic book, one of the first questions that will likely come to mind is: How many pages should it have?
While there is no single "correct" page count,
most comic books fall into a handful of well-established formats. In this
guide, we'll look at the most common page counts for comic books, explain why
saddle-stitched comics must have page counts that are multiples of four, and
discuss how page count affects the finished product.

24 to 32 Pages is the Most Common Range for Comic Books
When most people think of a comic book, they picture the
traditional American format that has been popular since the Golden Age of comics.
American comic books generally fall within the 24- to 32-page range. Although some projects fall outside this range, 24 to 32 pages remains the industry
standard for major publishers and independent creators. This is because it provides
enough length to develop the storyline while still remaining very affordable to
print.
Saddle-Stitching is the Most Common Binding Method for Comic Books
You may have noticed that the pages counts of 24 and 32 are
both evenly divisible by four. This is because the vast majority of comic books are
produced using saddle-stitch binding, a method that secures folded sheets
together with two staples along the spine.
Each folded sheet, often called a signature, contributes
four pages when assembled into the finished book. As such, the page count of
saddle-stitched books must always be divisible by four. So within the popular
24- to 32-page range, the available options are 24, 28, and 32 pages.
By the way, not only is saddle-stitching the ideal binding method
for joining a relatively low number of pages, it is also the most economical
and readily-available binding method.
Types of Comic Books that have Less than 24 Pages
While most comic books contain between 24 and 32 pages,
certain types of comics are often produced with lower page counts, such as 8,
12, 16, or 20 pages. These include comics intended to be used as free giveaways as well as comics
that simply have more concise content, such as:
- Promotional and Marketing Comics
- Public Safety and Health Awareness Comics
- Religious Outreach and Ministry Comics
- Early-Reader and Educational Classroom Comics
- Souvenir and Mini Editions
- Preview Comics and Prototypes
- Kickstarter Samples
Types of Comic Books that have More than 32 Pages
Comic books longer than 32 pages are less common than
standard issues, but they are definitely produced for a variety of purposes. Some
examples of comics that have expanded page counts include:
- Annuals
- Special Event Comics
- One-Shot Comics / Standalone Stories
- Giant-Size and Oversized Issues
- Anthologies and Collections
- Anniversary Issues
- Graphic Novels
It should be pointed out that once the page count exceeds 60
pages, the perfect binding method is recommended. This is because the wire
staples used for saddle-stitching can only effectively secure a given number of
sheets before a closed book will be prone to springing open. Hence, saddle-stitched
comics with over 60 pages might not lie as flat as desirable.

That's why perfect binding has been used on thicker comics
and graphic novels for decades. This method secures the cover and pages with a
flexible adhesive and yields a flat, printable spine. Unlike saddle-stitching, which
works best on thinner books, perfect binding can be used to create books with
several hundred pages.
